Como sucede com a maioria das cidades e vilas ao longo da costa algarvia, os efeitos destrutivos do terramoto de 1755 deixaram poucos sinais do esplendor passado do Portimão. Tudo o que resta da igreja original da Nossa Senhora da Conceição, do século XV, é o portal, uma gárgula e um contraforte góticos, o resto terá sido reconstruído nos séculos XVIII e XIX. A mistura de estilos arquitetónicos do austero Colégio dos Jesuítas deve-se também às sucessivas obras de reconstrução ao longo dos séculos, mas este abriga a maior igreja do Algarve e também merece uma visita. Muitos locais de interesse histórico que dão testemunho da presença das antigas populações do Algarve podem ser encontrados um pouco mais longe. O sítio arqueológico da Abicada contém vestígios de vilas romanas dos séculos I e IV, existe um importante cemitério do período Neolítico/Calcolítico em Alcalar e a arquitetura mourisca das capelas de São João e de São Pedro evoca os locais sagrados onde os Muçulmanos enterravam os seus ascetas religiosos – os marabus.
Os amantes do golfe têm vários campos à disposição, incluindo o Alto Golf & Country Club, o campo do Morgado e os famosos campos do Penina Championship.

The coastal area is ideal for leisurely strolls, and the exclusive Clube Naval offers fabulous restaurants overlooking the harbor.
There are many opportunities for shopping in Portimão, either in the narrow streets of the historic center, full of local handicrafts, or in the modern shopping centre. As with most cities and towns along the Algarve coast, the destructive effects of the 1755 earthquake left little sign of Portimão's past splendor. All that remains of the original church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, from the 15th century, is the portal, a gargoyle and a Gothic buttress, the rest will have been rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. The mixture of architectural styles of the austere Colégio dos Jesuítas is also due to the successive reconstruction works over the centuries, but it houses the largest church in the Algarve and is also worth a visit.
